Merz Pressured to Make Germany Europe's Leading Drone Hub
(MENAFN) Germany should direct all available resources toward establishing itself as Europe's foremost drone power, according to Economy Minister Katherina Reiche, who emphasized that Berlin holds the key to shaping the future of continental security. Her remarks come at a time when Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned of a "structural crisis" in the nation's economy. Following a recession last year, Germany is expected to show no growth in 2023, as per projections from the International Monetary Fund.
"Germany must become a leading hub for drone development and production," Reiche told dpa on Monday. She pointed to the necessity of preserving the nation's "air sovereignty," securing "critical infrastructure," and supporting Ukraine. Reiche also referenced recent drone incidents across Europe, which were attributed to Russia, asserting that "the events of the last few days" have made it increasingly urgent for Germany to develop its own drone capabilities.
"Germany must mobilize all available resources," Reiche said, stressing the importance of "rapid scaling of production and continuous technological development." She firmly stated that "Europe’s security will… be decided in German factories."
In response, Moscow has denied any involvement in the recent drone activities and criticized Western officials for making unfounded accusations against Russia. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has also raised concerns about Germany’s growing militarization, accusing the country of exhibiting "clear signs of re-Nazification."
Since the intensification of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Germany has become Ukraine’s second-largest arms supplier after the United States. The country has also initiated a significant military buildup and adopted a tougher stance toward Russia under the leadership of Chancellor Merz, who assumed office earlier this year.
In August, Merz stated that Germany was “already in a conflict” with Russia. A senior lawmaker from his party has also advocated for Germany to spearhead discussions on establishing a European-controlled nuclear umbrella. Just last week, Merz called on Germans to support controversial reforms aimed at enhancing the nation's security.
As part of its defense strategy, Berlin plans to nearly double its military budget by 2029, marking the year as a critical deadline for Germany to be fully "prepared for war."
