EU Introduces Two AI Strategies to Revolutionize Industry, Science
The "Apply AI Strategy" targets a broad array of fields including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, energy, mobility, manufacturing, construction, agri-food, defense, communications, and culture. Among its concrete plans are the creation of AI-driven advanced medical screening centers and backing the development of cutting-edge frontier models and agentic AI systems tailored to industries such as manufacturing and environmental protection. To fuel these efforts, the Commission is channeling approximately 1 billion euros (1.16 billion U.S. dollars) in funding.
Complementing this, the "AI in Science Strategy" focuses on scientific innovation by allocating 58 million euros in the pilot phase of the virtual institute Resource for AI Science in Europe (RAISE). This funding is dedicated to training, retaining, and attracting top AI research talent.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the transformative vision, stating, "We will drive this 'AI-first' mindset across all our key sectors, from robotics to healthcare, energy and automotive."
Despite these sweeping plans, AI adoption in European businesses remains modest. Eurostat data shows that in 2024, only 13.5 percent of enterprises with 10 or more employees across the EU incorporated AI technologies into daily operations.
