EU Introduces Strategy to Tackle Cyberbullying

(MENAFN) The European Commission revealed a continent-wide Action Plan Against Cyberbullying on Tuesday, positioning a newly designed mobile application at the heart of its strategy to assist children and adolescents in reporting digital harassment and accessing support more efficiently.

According to an official statement, the initiative seeks to safeguard the mental well-being of young individuals in online spaces by enhancing complaint systems, aligning national responses throughout the bloc, and reinforcing prevention through improved digital literacy and safer internet habits.

A central component of the program is the launch of a user-friendly EU-wide application that will enable victims to file reports of abuse with national helplines, securely preserve evidence, and obtain personalized assistance.

The European Commission will create a standardized framework for the application, which member countries can customize, translate, and integrate with their domestic support services.

"We want to boost healthy and responsible digital practices from an early age to help prevent cyberbullying," Henna Virkkunen, executive vice-president for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, stated during a press briefing, cautioning that many young people are "too often left feeling sad and left out" due to online harassment.

The strategy further promotes a more unified EU response, encouraging member states to craft detailed national policies and agree on a shared definition of cyberbullying to enhance data gathering and cross-country comparisons.

Within the scope of the initiative, the European Commission will also rely on current EU regulations, including the Digital Services Act (DSA), the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD), and the Artificial Intelligence Act.
