EU, South Korea Agree to Boost Cooperation as Global Security Ties Tighten

(MENAFN) The European Union and South Korea agreed on Wednesday to deepen cooperation, emphasizing that security challenges in Europe and the Indo-Pacific are becoming increasingly linked amid rising global tensions.

According to reports, the commitment was made during the 11th EU–South Korea Summit in Brussels, attended by European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung.

The leaders agreed to launch negotiations on a Security of Information Agreement, intended to enable the secure exchange of classified material between the two sides.

Von der Leyen stated, "Our security is more interconnected than ever," pointing to the involvement of North Korean troops fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine as an example of how developments in one region can have wider global consequences.

She also commended Seoul’s support for Ukraine, describing South Korea as "one of Europe's closest partners in the Indo-Pacific region and on the global stage."

In addition, she said both sides plan to strengthen cooperation on economic resilience, ensure stable access to critical raw materials, and safeguard sensitive technologies from external risks.
